This programme, which is led by the Centre for Statecraft and National Security (CSNS), aims to keep alive the heritage and intellectual culture represented by the Office of Net Assessment (ONA) in the United States Department of Defense from the 1970s onwards. As part of this effort, the project aims to ensure that best practices are maintained through the education of a new generation of scholars and policymakers in the craft of net assessment. A second objective is to ensure that the project contributes directly to British and allied net assessment throughout a policy laboratory model. As per the original concept of the ONA, this can range from direct work on current national security challenges and work on the future of war, through to more cerebral and theoretical “think pieces” in the applied history tradition.
